The new five-time champion Lewis Hamilton won his eleventh win of the season Sunday after driving his Mercedes to a well-judged triumph in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, crowned with incidents.
The 33-year-old Briton, starting from his 83rd pole position, came home with 2.5 seconds ahead of his main rival in the title, four-time German champion, Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel of Germany .
The victory came after a race that started with a horrible crash at the start of the lap during which Nico Hulkenberg escaped unhurt, his flamboyant Renault car having rolled into the barriers.
Dutchman Max Verstappen was third in front of his team-mate Red Bull on the occasion of his 100th race for Red Bull and his 150th overall, before moving on to Renault and Valtteri Bottas in the second Mercedes.
Carlos Sainz was sixth for Renault ahead of Charles Leclerc (Sauber) for Ferrari, Sergio Perez (Force India), Romain Grosjean, who played with Hulkenberg in the first round, and his teammate Haas, Kevin Magnussen.
Retired double champion Fernando Alonso finished 11th for McLaren at his 311th appearance and goodbye.
Hamilton's victory completes a season of total dominance for the Englishman. "I'm so happy right now," he says before hiring Vettel. "I know next year it will come back stronger, whatever people say, we always do our best."
Vettel responded generously.
"He deserves to be champion," Vettel said. "It was a difficult year and I tried until the last lap.
