GENESEE COUNTY, Mich. – Health officials in Genesee County report an increase in legionnaires' disease.
Legionnaires' disease can occur at any time of the year, but more diseases are reported in summer and early fall, according to a statement.
So far, 20 cases of respiratory infection have been reported in Genesee County this year.

Symptoms include:
- Cough
- breathlessness
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Diarrhea
- Mental changes
Legionella Bacteria cause infection and can be found in rivers, lakes and streams. They are also found in artificial water supplies that aerosolize water such as cooling towers, hot water tanks, humidifiers, nebulisers, showers, hot tubs and decorative fountains.
Filter the water will not remove Legionella bacteria.
The bacteria can not be transmitted from one person to another.
Health officials said that most healthy people exposed to Legionella not to be infected.
People aged 50 and over, smokers and people with chronic lung disease are more likely to be infected.
