Heart health and metabolism benefit from a regular bedtime

To sleep at the same time every night can not only be beneficial for children, but also for adults. A new study highlights the benefits of a regular bedtime.

deprivation can cause stress, weight gain, hypertension, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Research shows that lying down and waking up at the same time each day is a healthier option.

A researcher at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, North Carolina, USA, found that a regular bedtime benefits not only children, but also adults.

The researchers studied the sleep patterns of nearly 2,000 adults who wore sleep monitoring devices for seven days and sleep journals.

The results showed that a regular bedtime keeps the heart and metabolism healthy. People who went to bed at irregular times were more likely to be overweight, have high blood sugar and high blood pressure. These people were also more likely to have a heart attack or stroke than people with regular sleep patterns.

Researchers believe that sleep, heart health and metabolism influence each other, but they do not know if losing sleep causes weight gain, for example, or if it's the other way around.

"With more research, we hope to understand what is happening biologically, and maybe we can then say what will happen first or who is the chicken and who is the egg," lead author of the study.
