LONDON – Andy Murray announced Sunday on his Facebook page that he was retiring from Wimbledon because of a hip injury.

"It's with heavy heart that I'm announcing that I'm going to retire from Wimbledon this year," wrote the two-time Wimbledon champion. "I have made significant progress in practice and matches over the last ten days, but after long discussions with my team, we decided that playing the best of the five matches could be a little too early in the recovery process … we could try to be ready on time. "

Jason Jung will take Murray's place in the draw on line 112.

The tournament begins on Monday. Murray's first-round match against Benoit Paire was scheduled for Tuesday.

Murray underwent hip surgery in January and returned to competition just two weeks ago.

In 2013, he became the first Briton to win the Wimbledon singles title. He won the tournament again in 2016. Murray also won the US Open 2012 and two Olympic gold medals in singles.
