Heavy Andy Murray withdraws from Wimbledon

LONDON – Andy Murray announced Sunday on his Facebook page that he was retiring from Wimbledon because of a hip injury.

"It's with heavy heart that I'm announcing that I'm going to retire from Wimbledon this year," Murray wrote. "I have made significant progress in practice and matches over the last ten days, but after long discussions with my team, we decided that playing the best of the five matches could be a little too early in the Jason Jung will take the place of Murray in the table and will face Frenchman Benoît Paire on Tuesday.

Given Murray's lack of competition over the past year, his participation here in the All England's club was in doubt

Murray's hip problems were a topic coming into the Wimbledon tournament last year, and he tried several times to return to the field after being eliminated in the quarter-final against American Sam Querrey

Having failed to regain the competition, Murray opted for hip surgery in January and played only three games since his return from "The procedure." Murray told reporters at his pre-tournament press conference on Saturday that he was taking it daily.

"I'm training at a high level, a high intensity, every day with some of the best players in the world.It's very positive for me to do better, to compete again", was -he declares. "In other sports, when you come back, you do not have a tendency to come back and fight immediately against the best in the world, you could accumulate a little."

Murray admitted to having felt pain after returning to action against Nick Kyrgios at Queen's Club earlier this month, but he now says that these first ailments have stopped.

"There are some things that are still difficult and things I'm always trying to overcome," said Murray. "These things are way better than what they were a few months ago, that's for sure, but, again, it takes time."

The 31-year-old Dunblane player defeated Novak Djokovic in the 2013 finals to become the first British Wimbledon champion in 77 years. He repeated the feat in 2016 with a two-set win over Milos Raonic.
