The National Weather Service issued a flood warning for parts of Monroe, Randolph and St. Clair counties after the remnants of tropical storm Gordon invaded the area, bringing up to 5 inches of rain in some areas, flooding roads and fields.
The warning extends north to Randolph County, northwest of Monroe County and northwest of St. Clair County.
The weather service predicts that several series of heavy rain will likely occur Sunday morning due to a combination of a cold front and Gordon's remains in the Gulf of Mexico, and that it is moving north of Louisiana.
Total precipitation of 2 to 5 inches is expected in the region, with the highest totals along the Interstate 44 to Missouri corridor and Interstate 55 in Illinois.
Police in Illinois have responded to more than 70 service calls since the rain started Friday night, according to PSI spokesman Calvin Dye Jr. was involved, and the driver of the vehicle that caused the frontal collision was too fast for the conditions.
The other calls involved cars that had left the road. "Under such conditions, you can not control the posted speed limit. Slow down or you will leave the road, "said Dye.
There were reports of a car in a ditch filled with water near New Baden in Clinton County. No other information was immediately available.
Flooded streams and high water in low areas are also expected. Highway 50 is apparently closed between O'Fallon and Lebanon where it crosses Silver Creek.
According to the St. Clair County Disaster Management Agency, a vehicle was reportedly blocked in the floodwaters of the 9900 block of Old St. Louis Road, near Belleville. Another vehicle was installed in the floodwaters of Mine Haul Road, near Belleville.
Some places that will experience flooding include: Belleville, O`Fallon, East St. Louis, Collinsville, Arnold, Fairview Heights, Cahokia, Swansea, Shiloh, Festus, Union, Waterloo, Columbia, De Mascoutah, De Soto, Pevely, Centerville, Crystal City, St. Clair and Lebanon.
This includes the following highways: Interstate 64 in Illinois between Exits 9 and 27, Interstate 44 in Missouri between Exits 239 and 242, Interstate 55 in Missouri between exits 157 and 190, according to the Weather Service.
It also includes Washington State Park, the Mastodon Historic Site, the Sandy Creek Covered Bridge Historic Site and the Dunklin Government Historic Site.
Most high school football matches, usually played on Friday nights or Saturday mornings, had already been moved or canceled in anticipation of heavy rains.
The weather service recommends that drivers who encounter flooded roads:
▪ Turn around, most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
▪ Be particularly careful at night when it is harder to recognize the flood hazards.
The forecast predicts that rain continues Saturday night and Sunday with a 60% probability both days. The temperatures will be in the 60s with overcast and windy conditions.
