Four soldiers died and another was injured after the crash of a Turkish army helicopter in central Istanbul.

The helicopter was conducting training flights at the Samandira Air Base, in the city, when it crashed Monday morning in a residential neighborhood of the Sancaktepe neighborhood.

Emergency services are on the scene of the crash, according to the official Anadolu news agency.

An investigation is underway on the cause of the accident.

The UH-1 military helicopter crashed between two apartment buildings, scattering debris in the surrounding streets.

According to the Hurriyet newspaper, this is the fifth helicopter crash in Istanbul in the last 20 years.

In March 2017, seven people died when a helicopter struck a TV tower on the outskirts of the city. Four Russians were among the dead.

This is also the most recent incident involving the death of Turkish soldiers.
