A new case of hepatitis A involving an employee of a local restaurant was announced Thursday by health authorities.

"The health director will provide an update on hepatitis A in Mecklenburg County with details of a new case involving a local restaurant employee," the county health department of Mecklenburg said.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services confirmed the first death related to an epidemic of hepatitis A.

Hepatitis A is a contagious and preventable hepatic infection with a vaccine that can range from a mild illness of a few weeks to a serious illness lasting several months. It is usually transmitted by food or water contaminated with small, undetectable amounts of fecal matter from a contagious person.

"The best way to protect yourself against hepatitis A is to get vaccinated," said Dr. Heidi Swygard, medical director of viral hepatitis in the DHHS Public Health Division. "Good hand washing is also important, especially after using the bathroom, changing diapers and before preparing or eating food. Anyone who thinks they have been infected or exposed should consult a doctor. "

No other information on the most recent case has been published.
