This is not a dinosaur. It is the largest bird in the world.

What is 3 meters high and weighs 800 kilos?

According to a new study published Tuesday in the Royal Society Open Science, it is about the "biggest bird of the world".

This new species of elephant bird, now extinct, has been nominated by scientists from the Zoological Institute of the Zoological Society of London. Scientists have discovered "rigorous and quantitative new evidence" that it was a separate species from Aepyornis Maximus, which previously held the title of the world's largest.

The Titan de Vorombe, who allegedly lived in Madagascar, could not fly. This is the newest addition to the elephant-bird family – an extinct group of colossal non-flying birds that traveled to Madagascar during the later Quaternary – what the scientists thought to be only Aepyornis and Mullerornis.

"The elephant birds were the largest of Madagascar's megafauna and arguably one of the most important in the history of the island's evolution – even more so than lemurs, "said lead author Dr. James Hansford.

Elephant birds have had a great impact on the ecosystem, "controlling vegetation by eating plants, spreading biomass and dispersing seeds through defecation," said Hansford.

"Madagascar still suffers the effects of extinction of these birds today."
