If you are at least 18 years old and plan to vote on November 6th, listen carefully: the deadline for voter registration is approaching.

Forty-nine states and the Federal District of Columbia require electors that they register before voting in local, regional, or federal elections. The registration deadlines vary, but the majority of them are in October – and 19 of these deadlines are on Tuesdays. In many states, residents can register in person, by mail or online.

The basics

US citizens aged 18 and over who meet their state's residency criteria can register to vote by completing a form. (Find the requirements of your state here.) Most states allow online registration, but you can also register with your local or regional election office.

North Dakota is the only state that does not require registration before voting.

Most states also allow voters to vote before polling day. Find out if your state is voting early here.

  • Four other states also have deadlines this week. The Missouri deadline is Wednesday, October 10, Oklahoma and North Carolina are on Friday, October 12 and Delaware is Saturday, October 13. All three allow registration in person, by mail or online.
  • Tuesday October 16th is another popular deadline for states. This is the registration deadline for Kansas, Maryland, New Jersey, Oregon and West Virginia. South Carolina follows closely with a Wednesday, October 17th deadline.
  • Residents of Alabama, California and South Dakota must be registered with Monday, October 22.
