The four NL teams that needed to win won on the last day of the MLB season, as the Dodgers, Rockies, Cubs and Brewers kept all their hopes of winning a division title. Their victories constituted what will be a wild prelude to the NLDS, with only the Atlanta Braves assured of their place so far.
Honestly, though, the 162 match was not as dramatic in the league. The Dodgers made things easier for their fans, leading a 9-0 lead over the Giants with a third inning of seven innings and a 15-0 win. Milwaukee and Colorado could also stay calm as the Brewers beat the Tigers 11-0 and the Rockies beating the 12-0 Nationals. The Cubs played their closest match, looking "slightly interesting" by bowing 2-0 to the Cardinals, but a third with four points allowed them to win 10-5. These results all mean that we will see the first two games of tiebreakers since the Tigers lost to the Twins in 2009.
Here is what will happen:
- On Monday, the Rockies will travel to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers, and the Brewers will travel to Chicago to play the Cubs for their respective titles. The winner of each of these games goes directly to the NLDS.
- On Tuesday, the two losers of the Monday games will meet either in Milwaukee or Chicago for the NL Wild Card match. The winner goes to the NLDS and the loser is eliminated.
- Thursday, the NLDS begins, the Braves playing against the winner of NL West and the winner of NL Central playing against the Wild Card team.
Oh, and the A's playing the Yankees in New York on Wednesday as two wildly successful AL wild card teams clash for the elimination of the playoffs. If that interests you at all.
