Josh McDaniels stunned many people when he refused the Colts head coach position last winter to remain the Patriots' offensive coordinator. But he would have had millions, if not millions, of reasons to do it.

According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Patriots have awarded McDaniels a five-year contract – "which never happens for a coordinator" – at an annual rate that "eclipses $ 4 million a year" at some point .

"After what I am told," said Rapoport Sunday on the NFL Gameday, "he is paid as a new head coach, the highest paid football coordinator by far."
