Here's how the 30 Dow Jones Industrial Average shares posted record returns

The Dow Jones Industrial Average recorded a new closing record on Friday.

The Dow Jones was up 0.3% Friday and 2.3% for the week to close at 27,743.50 points.

The S & P 500 index

SPX, -0.04%

was little changed Friday and up 3.4% for the week. The Nasdaq Composite Index

COMP -0.51%

fell 0.5% on Friday, but only showed a slight drop for the week.

Analysts have continued to digest the flow of mostly positive economic data. The massive cuts to federal income taxes that President Trump enacted in December were largely rewarded by the excellent year-over-year comparisons of profits and sales by US companies. But according to an analysis by the Leuthold Group, tax cuts are just the "icing on the cake" of an already strong economic expansion.
