Tonight (October 20th), International Observe the Moon Night is an annual celebration where people from around the world enjoy the science and beauty of our closest neighbor. Two livestreams will allow you to participate online.
The online astronomy service Slooh will present a live stream from 20h. HAE (October 21 midnight GMT). It will show live images of the moon provided by amateur astronomers around the world by telescope, as well as those of Slooh observatories. Slooh will present the streams of the Canary Islands Institute of Astrophysics and the Catholic University of Santiago, Chile. Questions during the show can be asked using the hashtag #ObserveTheMoon. You can watch the live stream on the Slooh website, and here also on Space.com, with the kind permission of Slooh. But if you have a live feed from the moon that you lead yourself, Slooh has a contest for you. Post a link to your live stream on Twitter, making sure to tag @slooh. Slooh hosts – as well as the public – will announce the best streams at the end of the show. The categories include the most exotic locations, the best background scenery and the clearest live images. The winners will feature not only on the Slooh website, but will also receive a copy of the Slooh news anthology on the space, "The Saturn Above It".
Paige Godfrey, Slooh's astronomer "will talk in detail about our nearest neighbor, the only other celestial body on which man has walked," said a Slooh representative in a statement. "We will cover the importance of the moon during history as inspiration for story telling and making myths."
Another livestream will present the moon above the historic city of Rome. The virtual telescope project plans to show the moon "suspended above the famous monuments of the Eternal City, with the live commentary of astrophysicist Gianluca Masi, founder of the virtual telescope project". This livestream will begin at 11:00 am EDT (16:00 UTC).
