You do not have a lot of pennant races these days. But if you are a fan of chaos, then last week, the National League may be for you.
The American League has no drama (and some do not argue with the DH, but I'm not Puritan, I can not make the hats work). We know the playoff teams, we know their order outside of where the game will be played. At this point, it's semantics.
But in the National League, you can not go yet to the restoration. Four teams and three open places. And it may take longer this week to understand it.
The Milwaukee Brewers are at the top of the leaderboard with two games. With six games to play, it would be difficult to cough. Even if they had to separate these last six, they would need the Rockies and Cardinals to make them disappear from the playoffs. Quite improbable.
Except that the week starts with the Cardinals hosting the Brewers for three games, so that they can have the Brewers halfway with the Heimlich they wish. The Rockies will hope that it goes in the other direction, softening the Cardinals for them to be hunted down.
But the Rockies still have two chairs open before the music stops. They are a match and a half behind the Dodgers for NL West, and the same distance behind the Cardinals for second place in the draw, with a two-on-two matchup. It could be vital.
The Rockies have something of an edge over the Cardinals as they will have their next seven home games while the Cardinals will be on the road. They will also host the Phillies and Nationals at Blake St., and both have nothing to do. Cardinals must travel to Wrigley to finish the season. But at this point, the Cubs could be thirsty for hangover after winning the NL Central and the best league record.
Unfortunately for Rocky Top, the Dodgers played three games with the Diamondbacks lost in the wood, then found themselves in San Francisco against a team of Giants who replaced all his bats by pool noodles.
