Californians love their Toyota Prius. Just last year, some 40,735 people were sold in the Golden State, as part of a growing trend for plug-in and hybrid hybrid electric vehicles, which reached 9.4% of the market total in 2017.
But Prius owners this week have received bad news: Toyota has announced the recall of more than one million Prius and C-HR crossover SUVs to repair part of the electrical system that could lead to a fire.
Just in case you are impacted, here are some things to know:
- The recall concerns certain Prius 2016-2018 vehicles, Prius Prime plug-in hybrids and C-HR hybrid gas-electric versions due to fire problems;
- In the United States alone, the recall involves approximately 192,000 Prius vehicles;
- The company said its vehicles had a potential problem with the engine wiring harness; part of this part, which is connected to the power control unit, could come into contact with the hood and wear over time, causing an electrical short circuit that could lead to a fire;
- Those with the affected vehicles must bring them to the dealer for free repairs;
- The problem was caused by vehicle assembly problems in factories in Japan, Toyota said in its recall notice;
- During an incident reported in Japan in September, a Toyota vehicle was damaged by a fire caused by the fault, said a spokesman for the company; no one was injured in this incident, he said.
- The spokesman declined to comment on any other accidents or injuries associated with the defect;
- Toyota said it would contact all known owners of the affected vehicles this month;
