Several high school students from Southern California are in hot water after stating racial and anti-gay insults for photos at a major picnic, school officials said. .
About 10 students from Escondido High School in San Diego County posed in such a way that the letters on their shirts spelled out offensive words, reported KGTV.
Students had received pre-approved words to form their photos at the campus event on Thursday. After the official photos were taken, some students decided to band together to spell out other words, reported the San Diego station.
The photos posted on social media show the word N and "fagot".
"The parents and guardians of the students involved are contacted by the school administrators and appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken," said Adriana Lepe-Ramirez, school principal, in a statement posted on Facebook.
"We all need to understand the power of our words and actions, and we must take responsibility for the decisions we make every day," continued his statement. "At Escondido High School, we will continue to work every day to build a culture of family and unity in our community."
Local police reacted Friday to a threat on social media that would have been linked to the photos, reported CBS 8.
The Escondido Police Department said it received anonymous information regarding a threat of violence at the school's football match this Friday.
The game was not canceled, although additional law enforcement officials attended as a precautionary measure.
