High school teacher arrested after allegedly hitting a student

MAYWOOD, California – A California high school teacher was arrested after broadcasting a video showing that he allegedly hit one of his students who was using a racial epithet, reports CBS Los Angeles. Marston Riley, 64, was released Saturday from Los Angeles County Jail after posting a $ 50,000 bail, according to Sheriff's records.

A video on cell phone showed Riley struggling with the student during the group course at Maywood Academy High School. One can see the teacher hitting the student over and over and at one point using an object to hit him. The student was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries and released, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

"I was scared for the kid, and partly for the teacher too," CBS Los Angeles told a student who had attended the fight.

The fight started after the teacher declared that the student was not wearing the appropriate school uniform, said the witness at the station. The student responded with a tirade of racist comments. The student would have used the word -N and would have cursed the teacher, who was black.

"It was just a back and forth, and then a teacher decided to throw a punch and that's when everything happened," said the witness.

Parents of school students said that they were furious after watching the video. "I think something needs to be done – it's out of control," said one parent at the station.

Riley could not be reached for comment. The appearance is scheduled for November 30.

A GoFundMe page has been created by teachers' supporters to raise funds for its legal fees. They say that he has been physically assaulted or verbally in the past.

Crisis counselors and additional school police patrols will be at the Maywood Academy High on Monday, the district announced.

Maywood is a small town of about 27,000 inhabitants located southeast of downtown Los Angeles.
