VANCOUVER – The University of British Columbia is creating a new chair to study the potential role of marijuana in the treatment of opioid addiction, funded by the provincial government and one of the largest players in the field. Cannabis industry.
The epidemiologist and research scientist M-J Milloy will be Canopy Growth's first cannabis science professor at the university.
The Ministry of Mental Health and Addiction states in a statement that the Chair will lead clinical trials to explore how cannabis can help people with opioid-eating disorders stay on their plan to treatment.
According to the ministry, Milloy's research has shown that daily cannabis use is linked to an increased likelihood that people will maintain treatment and a lower risk that street youth will start injecting drugs.
Minister Judy Darcy said Milloy would be the first teacher in Canada to focus on reducing the knowledge gap between cannabis treatment and opioids.
Marijuana company Canopy Growth is contributing $ 2.5 million, while the province is contributing $ 500,000 to UBC and BC Center on Substance Use.
