It would be easier to make a list of those who were not at Ralph Lauren's epic 50th birthday show and yesterday evening at Central Park. The figures ranged from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to movie icon Steven Spielberg to Kanye West's music impresario, which reinforced Lauren's reach across cultures and industries to touch everybody. This sentiment was expressed last night, when the show of the designer was doubled friends dressed in his face, who took place for an evening inimitable. And for some of Lauren's most dynamic customers, the memories of wearing it go back to the beginning of the designer as a designer of ties.
"I like the fact that he's started making ties," said Jessica Chastain, beaming in a pleated sunflower dress. "It's a testament that if we have that passion, that fire in us, just to do it". Anne Hathaway, who opted for a sleek Lauren suit, quickly joined Chastain. "My father-in-law was the one selling those links at Bloomingdale's – he remembers Ralph's arrival and the sale of ties in the trunk of his car." But did the duo have any problems? Favorite pieces in their spacious cabinets? "I like Ralph Lauren tux, like the one I wear at [Woman fragrance] campaign, "said Chastain. This idea was also shared by Kelly Ripa, joined by her husband Mark Consuelos. "I love his imprint on American culture," Ripa said, adding that he "confers elegance and glamor to American culture."
