LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) – A homeless shelter in Kentucky will begin demanding that clients be immunized against hepatitis A before staying.
The Lexington Herald-Leader reports that Ginny Ramsey, co-founder of the Catholic Action Center The Refuge will offer free hepatitis A vaccines to those who do not have health insurance. Ramsey says this requirement was approved this month after organizers learned that a local homeless man had tested positive for hepatitis A. Ramsey says the disease has spread quickly in the homeless population of another city, and she did not want that to happen again.
Polly Ruddick is Director of Lexington's Office of Homeless Intervention and Prevention. Ruddick says that the shelter does not receive any money from the city or state and will be Lexington's only refuge to require vaccination
