A brother of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez has been indicted in the United States for planning to bring tons of cocaine into the country.

Federal prosecutors in New York announced Monday a drug plot and other charges against Antonio "Tony" Hernandez. He had previously denied any involvement in illegal activities.

The former Honduran congressman was appearing in Miami court, where he was arrested on Friday. His lawyer's name was not immediately available.

An indictment accuses Tony Hernandez, 40, of being "a large-scale drug trafficking" so involved in the cocaine trade that the drug has sometimes been hit with its initials.

According to the indictment, he had organized heavily armed security checks – including sometimes the Honduran police – for drug shipments.
