A newlywed couple was forced to test their wishes just days after attachment to the knot, when a honeymoon cold has turned into a revolutionary illness for the groom.
Adam and Bridget Spoerri, from the US state of Wisconsin, were married in July.
After their wedding, they took a car trip and both had a cold in their chest, but although Mrs. Spoerri's illness was gone, her husband did not seem to be healed.
They have spent almost every day in the hospital since Mr. Spoerri is slowly recovering from a crippling, polio-like illness that usually strikes children, Fox News reported.
Spoerri said she spent the night with her husband before driving him to the ER on August 5th.
"His head has become very weak. He could not swallow and his breathing was so difficult, "Spoerri told Fox 6 Now.
It will be two months before Spoerri, 30, is diagnosed with Acute Flaccid Myelitis (AFM), which his family said he believed was at high risk from taking immunosuppressive medications for the treatment of his asthma and Crohn's disease.
AFM is a rare and serious disease that affects the nervous system. It causes sudden weakness of the arms or legs, as well as loss of muscle tone and reflexes. It can also cause sagging of the face, difficulty moving the eyes, droopy eyelids or difficulty swallowing.
The most severe cases can lead to respiratory failure. Patients, like Mr. Spoerri, will need a ventilator. Most patients recover, but others may face lasting weakness or other complications.
Mr. Spoerri and his wife communicated via a notebook, as he is able to move his hands and wrists to write, according to a GoFundMe page. According to the page, doctors removed it from the ventilator.
"I thought that he was dying every day for the first two weeks," said Ms. Spoerri, a high school English teacher. Sentinel Newspaper. "I had no hope."
Since then, Mr. Spoerri has been transferred from a medical center and is currently being treated in a long-term care facility, but the duration of his recovery is unclear.
"Adam and his wife have shown such strength throughout this disease," said Taylor Finseth, Spoerri's neurologist, Sentinel Newspaper. "They really amaze me. The love his wife gives him is incredible.
