The trend of the electronic cigarette is now described as an epidemic by the Food and Drug Administration.
Traditional cigarette consumption has reached its lowest level among high school students in Mississippi, but Attorney General Jim Hood said vaping devices are the big problem now.
"The nicotine intake is identical to a pack of cigarettes," Hood said. "There are about 200 puffs in this electronic cigarette, and parents do not realize they are doing it at school. They often do it in their room.
Hood has written to all state retailers asking them to be good citizens and not sell electronic cigarettes. He also sent letters to school principals to raise awareness of the dangers. Hood announced that he will soon pass a bill to tax vape devices like cigarettes. He has also partnered with judges and the Mississippi State Department of Health to address this problem.
"No one wants his kids to become addicted, and that's what happens. Our kids develop an addiction because they can try these solutions, they can get them (and) they think they're cool, "Hood said. "The Bureau of Narcotics discovered that some vape stores were blending pods at the back of the stores and incorporating illegal substances such as fentanyl."
Hood said that he would like to know the legal age to buy vaping kits worn from 18 to 21 years old.
