My special Aflac duck was created to be educational and therapeutic, with features specifically designed to comfort children with cancer. It has RFID-compatible emoji cards on the chest that allow patients to choose a "feeling" that they want the machine to reflect. If they choose the wrinkled face, for example, the duck lowers his head, sinks and lets out a sad moan.
There is also a port with an RFID chip that kids can use to pretend to give duck chemotherapy. And parents can download the app accompanying the pen for iOS and Android, where children can bathe, feed themselves and give him medicine. The company says that these features give children a sense of control during their treatment. In addition, the duck has a heart rhythm and deep breathing functions that can be used to calm patients. While the current deployment only concerns two hospitals, Aflac plans to expand its campaign to US hospitals later this year, providing free to newly diagnosed children ages 3 to 13 a robotic duck.
