HOUSTON – US striker Ed Oliver had a heated discussion with Houston coach Major Applewhite just before the half-time of the Cougars' game against Tulane on Thursday night.
Applewhite has approached Oliver, who missed four straight games because of an injured knee, on the sideline of Houston before half-time and pulled out the touch judge's jacket from his shoulder. Oliver could then be seen screaming at Applewhite as the team headed to his locker room at half-time.
Laura Rutledge of ESPN said that Applewhite had confirmed that the dispute was about the fact that Oliver was wearing a long black jacket on the sidelines. Applewhite told Oliver, who was in outfit and inactive for the game, that the jackets were reserved for active players.
Oliver was retained by Houston's athletic performance director, Rod Grace, as he shouted at Applewhite on the way to the tunnel.
Oliver, who became the first underclassman to win the Outland Trophy as the country's top domestic lineman, is widely considered one of the top five picks in the NFL draft next spring.
He has 51 tackles and 13.5 tackles for the loss this season, but he recently moved from No. 2 to No. 7 to Mel Kiper Jr.'s last big board after missing a month of action. Oliver suffered a knee bruise against Navy on October 20th and has not played since.
Wednesday, Oliver posted a cryptic tweet on Twitter who read: "I gave everything so that there are things to lose." This led to the thought that he had decided to no longer play this season with the Cougars.
But Oliver told ESPN's Rutledge that it was not his intention. Instead, he said he wrote it so that if he can not come back, people will know how much he gave to the team.
Meanwhile, Houston lost quarterback Eriq King as a result of a knee injury in the second quarter of the Cougars' match against Tulane.
King, the FBS touch leader responsible for his entry Thursday night, suffered the contactless injury at the end of the second quarter. After putting the ball back, King jumped up and grabbed his right leg as he fell to the ground. He was taken off the field before the end of the match.
The junior quarterback was responsible for 48 touchdowns before Thursday's game, nine more than No. 2 player at this position, Oklahoma quarterback, Kyler Murray. King made 11 assists on 15 for 82 yards and one touchdown and 82 yards and one touchdown before leaving the game, giving him 50 touchdowns for this season, an American Athletic Conference record.
Real freshman Clayton Tune entered the King's relief game.
