SANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) – The third time was the charm of James Harden.
The Houston Rockets star was voted the most valuable player in the NBA after being a two-time runner-up, beating LeBron James and Anthony Davis of the Pelicans at NBA Awards four times Monday night.
Harden joined Michael Jordan as the only player to have averaged at least 20 points, eight assists, five rebounds and 1.7 steals in one season.
He dominated the league scoring, scoring three points and 50 points with four, while helping the Rockets win 65 wins.
"The last four years have been like knocking on the door, knocking on the door, the moment has finally arrived," Harden said behind the scenes. "Every year you try to come back and be better than the year before, and just to finally have this trophy, that means a lot."
James did not attend the show in Barker Hangar at Santa Monica Airport amid rampant speculation about his future. He has until Friday to tell the Cavaliers he will recover his $ 35.6 million option for next season or opt for the free agency.
Harden, a native of Los Angeles, drove his mother on stage before accepting the trophy from Commissioner Adam Silver.
"I'm not going to be emotional," he says behind black sunglasses. "She is my spine in good and bad times."
