The magic words that anyone with back pain wants to hear: "I can fix you".
Except that it could not be further from the truth for Mary Efurd and 32 other patients who suffered at the hands of former neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch.
Duntsch, who became known as Dr. Death and The Butcher, expressed confidence in claiming he was the best of Dallas. He even had commercials on TV where he was talking about "giving you pain surgery".
Instead, the 47-year-old intentionally missed the surgery of his patents. Two of his patients died shortly after operations, while others remained paralyzed and wheelchair bound.
Survivors have described him as a "monster", a "psychopath" and a "killer".

Mary Efurd was 74 years old at the time of her operation. She woke up from her operation screaming with unbearable pain.
She quickly realized that she could not move her legs anymore. Passing under Duntsch's knife in 2012 ruined her life and since then she has been confined to a wheelchair.
When Mary Efurd woke up from a back operation, she screamed in pain and found that her legs were not working.
Duntsch had claimed that the operation would relieve the back pain she complained of, but by the time he had pulled out of the hands and washed his hands, Ms. Efurd was feeling worse than ever before. . The sun reported.
"Dr Death" pierced his muscle instead of his bone, was carelessly cut into a nerve at the root and deliberately twisted a metal screw into another – causing burning pains that lasted days.
"It took away my life, as it was, my freedom," said Ms. Efurd Interior Edition in 2015.
She was left in a wheelchair after treating her for back pain.
In another shocking case, Jeff Cheney said that he had woken up from an operation to learn that Duntsch had removed part of his spinal cord by mistake, paralyzing the entire right side of his body .
Jackie Troy found himself unable to speak – Duntsch paralyzed his vocal cords, as he had almost done with Jeff Glidewell, after taking his esophagus for a tumor and slicing it.
A new podcast, Dr. Death, explores his crimes in detail – with testimonials from people he has ruined, and lawyers who helped put him behind bars.

In February of last year, Duntsch was sentenced to life imprisonment for mutilating his patients, including Kellie Martin, who died as a result of an operation.
After her verdict and in a moving interview, Ms. Efurd told a Dallas-based magazine, DMagazine, that she would cry and wonder how difficult these first months were.
No doctor in Dallas has ever been convicted for a surgery that went wrong.
Jeff Glidewell was found with a sponge lodged in his throat.
Jackie Troy says she's found herself with her paralyzed vocal cords.
"I was so angry because my life changed so much … I was very independent and I had to become dependent on others for transportation, for my meals, for a lot of things," Ms. Efurd said.
Philip Mayfield sat outside the courtroom after the verdict, clutching a cane. He told Dallas magazine that he also could not feel the right side of his body after Duntsch cut a critical spinal nerve when trying to treat a herniated disc.
"He showed no mercy, no compassion that he showed towards any of the patients," said Mr. Mayfield. "Physically, I'm far from what I wanted to do, I'm far worse, it was supposed to be a minor intervention to relieve pain in my arms … and it eventually cut my spinal cord."

Neurosurgeon Robert Henderson, who was able to repair the damage to some patients as best he could, said, "It's almost literally a serial killer."
In an email disturbing his office assistant, The sun reported that he once described himself as "something between God, Einstein and the Antichrist."
And in another, he wrote, "I'm ready to leave the love, kindness and kindness and patience that I mix with all that I am and become a cold-blooded killer."

Duntsch had a doctorate in medicine and a Ph.D. from the University of Tennessee's Department of Health Sciences in Memphis.
He had been dubbed Dr. D, Dr. Death and The Butcher for serious professional misconduct resulting in the death and mutilation of several patients while he was working at Baylor Plano and Dallas Medical Center.
He would have had a drug problem, where he would have spent an entire night cocaineing at a party, before getting to work as soon as the sun would have risen and going straight to work. .
But Duntsch denied the drug claims, saying to a Interior Edition reporter, "No maam, never have".
It is well known that Duntsch had a distorted ego that could have led him to harm the people he was supposed to protect.
Prosecutors said that greed had fueled him, DMagazine reporting that his ego had exploded, as evidenced by other e-mails in which he compared himself to God and Einstein.
He once wrote that he was a "cold stone killer".
The abuse of drugs and alcohol has continued throughout his career, reported the publication, but it has never been tested positive.
The substance abuse charges remained largely outside the trial until the sentencing phase – the results were poor enough for the state to focus on those who would guarantee his sentence.
