In 2001, it seemed that Mariah Carey's career was over. Although originally, it was a victory lap for one of the best-selling musicians of all time, the com Shine turned into a public disorder. Bizarre promotional appearances and a brief hospitalization (which she has since linked to a diagnosis of bipolar disorder the same year) have pushed the soundtrack from August 21 to September 11 – one of the darkest days from American history. At this point, it was his least sold album and, of course, the film's universally negative critical reception only made matters worse.
Now, 17 years later and just one day before releasing his 15th studio album Caution, the soundtrack of Shine is the number one on iTunes graphics.
When such moments occur, it is usually a larger part of the zeitgeist that moves it forward. But this anniversary took place almost two months ago. There is no re-issue in sight. None of the songs have been re-used for, for example, a show, movie or song sample. It is not even available for broadcast on major sites such as Spotify or Apple Music. This time, it was an initiative of organic fans – and quite accidental – bringing together nearly two decades of Carey enthusiasts in hopes of recovering the legacy of the album.
"People often think it's a bad album because they associate it. [with] his film, but it's really good and underestimated, "says Kenny, a French Carey fan who helped create background support for the revival album. It's an album he revisits often, and when a new Carey project is to begin, he creates a private calendar in which he spends each day, until his release, to listen to his discography in chronological order. This time he decided to share the calendar publicly on his Twitter.
"It's just a kind of tradition," he says, refusing to give his last name. The schedule started on November 2nd with its eponymous debut and ends Thursday with the release at midnight of Caution. Shine was celebrated on November 9, one week before the release date of the new album.

"We thought it was a good idea and we jumped on board," organized the organizers behind the fan's account @MariahTrends recounts RS. (They refused to reveal their names for this article.) Every day, Mariah Trends tweeted nearly 10,000 followers of Kenny's matching calendar album and asked them for their favorite songs and lyrics. They would also encourage Lambily (the name of Carey's fandom) to broadcast the album. Since Shine is absent from these services, lambs were encouraged to buy it. Fortunately, the album had been reduced to $ 4.99 a few months ago, according to Kenny and Mariah Trends. "We continued as usual, then we noticed that Shine suffered a little shock, "add the officials Mariah Trends.
The album appeared for the first time in the iTunes soundtrack chart, but the sudden exploration encouraged fans to reuse the old hashtag. #JusticeForGlitter, which goes back years on Twitter thanks to Lambily's continued support for the album. This small push suddenly became a big push once the general public became aware of its ascent.
Boosted by this activity, Shine broke the top 100 iTunes all genres Monday, according to itunescharts.net, a site that monitors and archives the activity on iTunes store. The soundtrack continued to climb, recording more than 40 spots the next day. Carey herself has noticed the surprising commercial resurgence of the album and tweeted the hashtag after the album ranked in the Top 10 on iTunes Tuesday. Shine finally reached number one on Wednesday night, jumping over images of Imagine Dragons origin and A star is born. At the time of going to press, he is still there.
While the soundtrack was only moved 40 copies last week, it has already sold 852 copies in the first five days of the week's follow-up – an increase of 2,030% – according to the data. provided by BuzzAngle Music, which tracks music consumption daily. Impressively, sales of Shine these last five days represent more than a third of the total sales of the album all the year.
A Carey representative did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but the singer herself was ambivalent about the project. Watch what happens Host Andy Cohen said that "although it was two horrible years," she "felt like the soundtrack was a good soundtrack. I was trying to bring back the 80s a bit too early. It was in 2001 and people were like 'The eighties? We have just left the 80s! And I said to myself, "No, no, people are ready. Today, everything revolves around the 80s! "
"Mariah recognized[[[[Shine]Mariah Trends reported preparatory work that led to the current momentum of the soundtrack. The singer did not completely abandon the album, interpreting for the first time the title of the album "Loverboy" on her Sweet 2016 Fantasy tower.
Yet, love for Shine has long been there for fans, who have never slept to show their appreciation. Mariah Trends refers to the #JusticeForGlitter hashtag as a form of "resistance" to the lack of credit she has been awarded. They also note that there have been smaller fan initiatives such as "Shine Sundays "for an album that even the artist who wrote and interpreted it had a hard time loving long after it was released.
"Shine is a very special outing with a whole context, "said Kenny, who witnessed a wave of love from Lambily for the delightful share of pleasure that he accidentally unleashed. "It was not necessarily a happy moment in Mariah's life. But it's definitely iconic.
