The 5-year-old girl had a rare brain tumor
For most Americans, the holidays of July 4 were a day of celebration and fireworks with friends and families. But for the Daggett family of Fairport, New York, the holidays were overshadowed by a tragic reality: the loss of their 5-year-old daughter, suffering from cancer.
After a two-year battle, Zoey succumbed to his illness. A nurse captured a heartbreaking picture of Casey and Benjamin Daggett with their daughter in her last moments .

In 2016 while he was in a park, Zoey had fallen and began to limp. It was after the fall that the girl was diagnosed with a brain tumor known as Diffine Intrinsic Pontine Glioma.
According to the Boston Children's Hospital, Diffuse Intrinsic Pontine Gliomas – or DIPG – are "very aggressive and difficult to treat brain tumors found at the base of the brain." These tumors are located in a part of the brain which controls the vital functions of the body such as breathing, blood pressure and heart rate.
An average of 300 children aged 5 to 9 years are diagnosed with this rare tumor each year.
Although DIPGs can be treated with radiation and chemotherapy, surgery to remove the tumor is not an option because of its location in the brain.
Because this type of tumor is inoperable, the family had to seek treatment for Zoey by other means. They learned a test for an innovative form of treatment known as immunotherapy.
However, the trial was taking place in Cologne, Germany. Once admitted to the program, the family moved temporarily to Germany for treatment.
Although immunotherapy showed progress and reduced cancer cells in his brain, Zoey's symptoms worsened the following year . Eventually, the tumor began to spread to other areas of his brain, causing his premature death.
