Florida defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is one of the main reasons why the Gators are sitting at 6-1 with an outside chance of playing in the college football playoffs. A win against Georgia this weekend is a must, and Grantham could bring kryptonite to the Bulldogs.
His philosophy is aggressive and a little simple: bring more people than the offense can block in the event of death. What is not simple is the design, complexity and nuances of the origin and provenance of the additional advocates. The Gators' staff accepted and consequently won matches with an opportunistic defense. The key is to win on the third try, create turnovers and return the ball to the offensive. This style of attack that does not react adapts to their forehead, which is neither too big nor physical, but fast and explosive.
Florida ranks second in the SEC as a percentage of blitz, and the pressure is paying off. The Gators are third in the SEC in sacks (21) and tied for second in the country for forced turnovers (18).
Conversely, Georgia struggled to take third place and showed difficulties in aligning with faster cutting edges. Quarterback Jake Fromm has demonstrated his ability to keep up with his progress over time, but he is going to be anxious to find the receiver open when he is forced to throw in a hurry.
