In break with the story of the character, the hero does not remember who she really is.
At the heart of the first Captain Marvel The trailer is a headache for the hero's long-time fans: how much will Carol Danvers be visible in the character when she gets to the screen?
Oddly enough, the dominant character of the first half of the trailer is not Brie Larson's new hero, but Nick Fury of Samuel L. Jackson – who has two good eyes and a few hair, to emphasize that the film runs earlier than any Marvel movie except for the 1940s Captain America: the first avenger. This is Fury whose voice is heard before that of someone else, Fury who first centers the narrative around him ("The truth be told, I was ready to hang up until I meet you today ") and Fury knocking at the window to the story.
It's a subtle gesture that throws the trailer to thea – familiar to the faithful of Marvel and lays the foundations of the first words of Carol Danvers. "It's hard to explain – I keep having those memories, I see flashes," she explains. "I think I've had a life here, but I can not say if it's true." The audience also has the same flashes of young Carols that echo the hero that she has become, revealing to us that she's not completely aware of, yet: she really East human, even if she does not know for sure.
This story – a confusion about its origins – is a break with the origins of the character's comic strip. We have to wait for it, because the story of the page would be much too complicated (and to be honest, too ridiculous) to reproduce in a movie: "She had her powers by chance and her is called Mrs. Marvel until she remembers she was accidentally wiped by an X-Man, so she went to live in space for a while under the name of Binary, and then is returned and called a little Warbird, and then again Mrs. Marvel, and …. cleaner and smarter solution.
The suggestion that part of this new beginning includes the elimination of Carol Danvers' self-determination and agency – arguably the only part of the character that has won Carol Corps self-proclaimed fan base – is a risky proposition , although suggests that the story of the film will be from his connection with his past. ("Find out what makes her a heroine," because the slogan of the trailer evokes both Carol's trip and the public's exhortation.) Does the Carol Danvers that the fan of cartoons kissed will be absent? from the movie until the end of the film, with Captain Marvel to become so prologue for Avengers 4, who opens two months later like anything else?
It should be noted that the Marvel Comics branch has, unusually, been proactive in preparing for this possibility. Since July, the company publishes The life of Captain Marvel, a series of five issues by Margaret Stool, Carlos Pacheco and others that focuses on Carol Danvers' backstage since childhood, refining the character before her reinvention in the cinema. The collected edition of the story will be in store a few weeks before Captain Marvel reached the theaters, to offer newcomers and old school enthusiasts a chance to learn more about the current design of the character once they've left the theater.
Captain Marvel The film will introduce Carol Danvers to the general public and will give Marvel her first female lead hero – but judging by the first trailer, we still do not know exactly who will be the hero.
Captain Marvel Opens on March 8, 2019.
