Higher. Further. Faster. These words are not only the slogan of the latest entry into the film world of Marvel, but also the approach of the film to cement the place of Captain Marvel among an already flourishing pantheon of heroes. The film trailer, released Tuesday morning, does not waste time not only to establish the formidable power of Captain Marvel, but also to distinguish it from the heroes who preceded. Among these determining factors, Carol Danvers (aka Captain Marvel), of Brie Larson, will be the first woman to direct a solo film. The film is also the first entry to the MCU with a woman in the director's chair, along with Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Half Nelson, Mississippi Grind) pilot the project and, hopefully, make a soft landing when the film is released on March 8, 2019.
There is a sense of mystery surrounding Captain Marvel, not only for the viewers, but for Carol Danvers herself. Its origins, powers and place in the Marvel hero system are not immediately recognizable to the general public, as are the heroes of Captain America or Hulk. Or even in the case of Iron Man, the name of Captain Marvel does not give much to the public. While Marvel had major successes with comic characters who were far from being known when announcing their films, like the Guardians of the Galaxy and Ant-Man, they did it mostly through of comedy. Regarding the unknown, Marvel Studios has provided films that blink and wink at an unpretentious audience, letting them know that yes, it's ridiculous but that we're all on the right track .
But the trailer Captain Marvel, as Black Panther before that, do not use public misunderstanding in general to portray the character as a joke. Rather, it makes a statement that Captain Marvel means business, and if you do not know it, buckle well because it is about to change universes.
The second of Marvel Studios' films serves as a period piece (after Captain America: the first avenger) Captain Marvel owns its own 90s setup with a glimpse of a relic of the past: a Blockbuster showcase. But the film's 90s element is not just a facade, it seems to be part of the film's DNA. We have a glimpse of Carol Danvers' past from her childhood to her military training, but Carol is not sure whether these memories really belong to her. In comics, Carol becomes a Kree-Human hybrid after the explosion of a device called "Psyche-Magnetron" that alters her genes and combines them with the old Captain Marvel.
Although the film probably does not directly translate this story, the film seems to take a surprisingly complex approach to Carol's origins. We've got some simplified versions of Marvel characters over the years (see Thor), but after ten years in the MCU, the public is ready to complicate a little. From the trailer, it seems Captain Marvel will venture into a more enigmatic story of origin than we have seen before, if only because of a structure that seems to rely on unreliable flashbacks.
When we meet Carol for the first time, she is a member of Starforce, an elite military unit in Kree. If the Kree seems familiar, it's because they played a small important role in the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, and played a leading role in the ABC television series SHIELD Agents. So why do Carol and Starforce look so serious? The Kree in the MCU are a race known to keep their emotions in check. Without a doubt, Carol will struggle with this once back on Earth and begins to pick up memories of her past. Carol will not be the only Kree warrior to deal with her emotions, as Ronan, the villain of Lee Pace's Guardians, also returns to the fray. Although he is not yet the fanatic that he will become, Ronan will undoubtedly, during the movie, slip into the madness that ends up consuming him.
Another key member of Kree's officers is Mar-Vell of Jude Law. The Marvel Comics original, Captain Marvel, Mar-Vell (aka Walter Lawson) will serve as Carol's mentor in the film. Carol Danvers, who was originally known as Marvel in comics, originally conducted a title derived from Captain Marvel of Lawson before surpassing it in popularity. It should be noted that while Mar-Vell is said to believe in the Kree doctrine, he also has a human name and appearance like Carol, suggesting a complex origin. Perhaps the ABC series can be restored and the Inhumans reintroduced as a concept in Captain Marvel, or maybe these experiences can be a way to introduce the X-Men. Although the Kree-Skrull war was published in the The Avengers a series of comics and gathered most of the heroes and villains of Marvel, Captain Marvel positions the war at a time when only Carol can defend the Earth against foreign forces seeking to control it and protect its genetic source. While Captain America is still on the ice and Hank Pym retired as Ant-Man following the loss of his wife, Janet, Carol will be the only superhero on Earth. Captain Marvel may offer the greatest threat, in terms of range, for the solo function of an MCU character. The film will surely position Captain Marvel as the MCU's strongest hero, answer the question of where she spent all this time, and perhaps the key to her victory over Thanos. Avengers 4. Captain Marvel may have joined the party late, but there is plenty of reason to be glad she finally arrived.
