Hubble Space Telescope Renews Scientific Activities

The Hubble Space Telescope resumed normal operations last Friday with three fully functional gyroscopes and made its first scientific sightings on Saturday, NASA (National Agency for Aeronautics and Space) said.

The Hubble Space Telescope keeps an eye on the sky.

Hubble had problems with a gyroscope. The gyroscope is a device that measures the speed of rotation of the spacecraft. It is essential to help Hubble to turn and lock on new targets. Earlier this month, NASA revealed that Hubble was experiencing unexpected downtime after the failure of one of its gyroscopes and that the emergency gyroscope gave strange results. Mission team members worked to recruit a backup gyroscope, but struggled to do so because the gyroscope was returning abnormal readings.

NASA said last week that Hubble was getting closer to normal operations; Over the weekend, NASA announced the resumption of normal operations. Believing that the telescope was strangely blocked by some sort of obstruction, the NASA team performed a series of maneuvers to release the gyroscope, correcting the problem.

They also verified that the device was secure before adding other protections in case the high rotational speeds would recur, NASA said.

Khashoggi, and the Foreign Ministry has forwarded the request to Saudi Arabia, the Turkish media reported Friday. Khashoggi and Cengiz had recently built an apartment in Istanbul.

Other measures were taken the same day.

"On Friday night, the team began the process of restoring scientific instruments to the standard operating state," NASA said in a statement.

At the end of Friday, Hubble successfully completed maneuvers to reach the goal of early scientific observations and collected its first scientific data since October 5, NASA said. Had the back-up system continued to behave in an erroneous manner, the mission team would probably have opted for a gyroscopic mode, the other gyroscope being in reserve in reserve.

Launched in 1990, Hubble has already had problems with its gyroscopes. The last of them, in May 2009, included the replacement of the six gyroscopes. On October 22, NASA stated that gyro rates were back to normal and that they were doing additional engineering tests to confirm that the gyro was working properly.
