Huge traffic jams envelop Reagan National Airport on Sunday night

The intense traffic at the airport on Sunday that ends the end of Thanksgiving is almost a holiday tradition like turkey, but every year seems to create new memories and vexations.

A woman who said she regularly uses Reagan National Airport said Sunday night traffic was "by far the worst" she has ever seen.

The traveler, Caroline Rayburn, said she had never waited long for a taxi, but on Sunday night she said that she had been queuing for over 25 minutes.

"It was a complete disaster," said Laura Vogel, a resident of northern Virginia, about the traffic. "I have never seen it so bad." Some people left cars to get to the terminal, she said.

By calling the "saturated" roads, the airport suggested dropping off and picking up buses at the nearby subway stations.

The weather was nice in Washington and Metro was working, unlike a weekend earlier, when serious traffic jams assail the airport.

However, travel specialists have predicted that more trips would be made this Thanksgiving day compared to many years ago.

In addition, bad weather elsewhere in the country has delayed flights. A Chicago television channel announced that more than 800 flights had been canceled due to a major winter storm.

Some frustration was mitigated by unexpected grace notes.

The opera singer Joshua Blue said that he was stuck in a "dreadful traffic" from the airport. But he said, the Uber driver cheerfully applauded Pharrell Williams' "Happy" and it was "the healthiest thing."
