While the "Eastern mini-beast" is heading towards us, it's not just the UK that is facing a harsh winter.

Images appeared at the moment when huge waves destroy the balconies of the apartments of the island of Tenerife.

Dozens of seaside homes had to be evacuated as a result of the waves coming from the Atlantic Ocean.

The mayor of the region, Alvaro Davila, said that 65 apartments spread across two blocks of the town of Mesa del Mar had been cleaned up and that the state of alert had been issued.

Garichico was one of the most severely affected areas by the waves that crashed on the dike and flooded the streets to the amazement of the locals who filmed the race that led them to safety.

Further south, in the hotspots of the Adeje holiday, waves were also reported that broke the windows of a hotel restaurant, but there were no injuries either.

The first evacuation took place around 22 hours last night / Saturday night, and others followed around 2 am yesterday.

Most of the evacuated houses in Mesa del Mar are holiday homes.

It is unclear whether Britons have been invited to leave their apartments, although the city is popular with holidaymakers and has two natural pools that draw huge crowds of locals and visitors from one day to the next.

On the Spanish mainland, the province of Valencia on the east coast and parts of the Costa Blanca have been placed on red alert for today while they prepare for torrential rains.

Twenty town halls in the region, including the seaside resorts of Javea and Denia on the Costa Blanca, have announced the closure of schools today due to weather warnings.
