A team of zoologists, led by Yuesong Gao of the China University of Science and Technology, found evidence of two major extinctions of Adelaide penguins, which occurred about 750 to 200 years ago.
The results of this research have been published in the Journal of Geophysical Research and indicate that on the coast of Antarctica a hundred or so mummies of this type of bird, hidden under a thick layer of snow, have been found.
According to experts, the explanation of this event is that heavy rainfall and climatic conditions have forced animals to abandon their many sub-colonies. And in this region, zoologists have discovered abandoned colonies, as well as the remains of birds.
As part of the analysis to verify what happened during this massive extinction, scientists conducted studies on radiocarbon on leftovers. The researchers concluded that extreme weather anomalies were the main reason for this event.
Experts point out that a clear example of what could have happened is what has happened over the last few decades, where they have repeatedly observed an increase in Antarctic snowfall or the melting of snow. These can cause hypothermia and, as a result, low survival of the offspring.
