Hurricane Florence Path forces cruises to change destination from Bermuda to Canada

Hurricane Florence's anger forced a cruise line to change destinations, from Bermuda, to various places in the north of the country, drawing the wrath of passengers who were paying for holidays in the tropics.

Norwegian Cruise Line announced on Twitter that the ship, Norwegian Dawn, The departure Friday of Boston, planned in the deadlines, would not reach its initial destination, Bermuda, because of Hurricane Florence. Instead of Bermuda, the ship would sail north to Halifax and Sydney, Nova Scotia; St. John, New Brunswick; and Bar Harbor, Maine.

"The safety of our customers and our crew is always our priority," tweeted the cruise line.

The justification for the cruise, that the move was intended to ensure the safety of the passengers, did little to alleviate the disappointment and indignation felt by the travelers during the change of route.

Moving to a different date would cost about $ 750 per person, despite the fact that the website offers cruises for new dollar-less bookings.

"For me, it's the Norwegian who canceled the navigation," wrote Holmes on Facebook. "Yes, the boat is still sailing … but not in Bermuda."

While some passengers on the 2,000-passenger ship were upset by the change of route, a woman tweeted that she was on a Norwegian cruise during a hurricane and had a horrible experience.

"It was a nightmare," the tweet said. "I hope our captain redirects our route."

Newsweek contacted Norwegian Cruise Line but did not receive an answer in time for publication. The Norwegian Cruise Line Passenger Rights Charter states that passengers are entitled to a full refund if a trip is canceled due to mechanical failures and a partial refund if the trip is completed earlier due to mechanical failures. Changes to itineraries are also dealt with in the general conditions of the company, which stipulate that the company has the right to change the itinerary in case of:

• strikes
• Lockout
• Work stoppages
• riots
• Weather situation
• Mechanical difficulties

In addition to these events, Norwegian Cruise Line added that routes may be changed for "any other reason".

The strength of Hurricane Florence has fluctuated, but on Friday, AccuWeather announced that it would gain strength as it approaches Bermuda and the US east coast. As the first Category 4 hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, Florence is expected to bring life-threatening swell areas and strong winds.
