News & Observer reporter Andrew Carter and photographer Travis Long participated in two rescue missions on Friday in the waters of New Bern, in the north of the island.
After the second evacuation mission, they were completely soaked.
"I was ready to move on," said Carter, "but Travis recommended that we stay there and follow one last group in a boat, and this has led us to history."

Carter at the origin posted the picture on Twitter Friday. On Saturday morning, this tweet had been favored more than 4,700 times, retweeted more than 1,600 times and received over 130 comments.
Carter said Saturday that he was "touched" that the photo sounded with so many people.
"It means a lot to me, that people have a little more appreciated what these hurricane victims are going through," he said. "It was just a little while, but for me, the anxiety and worry on Simmons' face told a story that represents what many are living in the hurricane."
