The imminent arrival of Hurricane Florence, now a terribly big storm, East already affecting the strikes Week 3 games around college football. The biggest hurricane match was West Virginia road-trip # 14 to play NC State in Raleigh.
On Tuesday afternoon, NC State announced that the match "will not be played this weekend," but has refrained from saying that it had been canceled. "If this match were to be rescheduled or if a replacement home game had to be scheduled, tickets for the West Virginia match will be valid," the statement said. "If this game or substitute home game is not viable, a refund will be offered to season ticket holders, details will be communicated later."
A previous report that the game had been canceled was challenged by one of NC State's associate sports directors, Fred Demarest.
It remains to be seen if this game will be reprogrammed, but the options are limited to say the least. Mountaineer coach Dana Holgorsen has already told reporters that the match was at 15:30. AND Saturday or not at all.
"The only advice I've given is that we will not try to outsmart this system," Holgorsen said via the Post Dominion. "I'm not going to move him to another place, try to move him or push him away, it's disturbing a lot of people, it's disrupting too much, we have a plan to play Saturday at 3:30 am If we can not, then we will not play.
"It's real, it's dangerous," he added. "We will not put the student-athletes first – there will be many people affected by this."
Holgorsen does not make these calls, but it would be a strong statement to follow. His point of view on the logistical nightmares of reprogramming the game is notable. It's easy to move an event with more than 200 participants and thousands of viewers. Security alone is a problem. That would be the sudden change in ticketing. It's a massive undertaking.
This is not impossible, of course. Other games have been reprogrammed like Norfolk State vs. Liberty, but that is for December 1st. Neither WVU nor NC State are committed to this date as it is the weekend of the conference championship. Reprogramming becomes even more difficult when both teams enter into a conference. The Wolfpack took flight on October 13th and that of West Virginia on Saturday October 20th. In one case as in the other, someone will have to play three games in two weeks.
No thanks.
Frankly, this game does not have enough importance to be moved or postponed. It's a fun match, but the implications are not high enough. Not playing at NC State will not diminish 1) West Virginia's Big Game Championship hopes and 2) Will Grier's Heisman campaign.
Oh, and yes – it's a hurricane. It matters a lot to NC State, whose players and coaches have real problems to deal with. Forcing a team to travel to Morgantown when their collective minds are on family, friends and general evacuation are heartless things. If the current or future scenario of Holgorsen is well the ultimatum here, this game relies heavily on the category "never". There seems to be no reason to do anything but cancel this game.
