Hurricane Michael arrives while undecided voters – and polls suggest that they are not numerous in Florida this year – finalize their choices less than four weeks before the elections in any state. It presents opportunities and risks for a host of candidates who want to be competent and serious when voters decide and start voting.
Candidates include Governor Scott, who leads a fierce race for the Senate against outgoing Democrat MP Bill Nelson and Mayor Andrew Gillum of Tallahassee, the Democratic nominee for governor.
The way they approach preparations and the response to the storm could strengthen their leadership position – or halt months of painstaking campaign work rendered useless by the late blot of a catastrophic disaster.
"It's a chance to show leadership, but it's also a chance to fail at management," said the former governor, North Carolina, who has faced to a hurricane about a month before the elections lost in 2016. Michael is moving fast
After deeply destructive hurricanes, like Florence last month and Harvey in 2017, both slipping on dry land and pouring out disastrous amounts of rain, Michael was moving at a speed that was "almost exactly average for storms," said Brian McNoldy, principal investigator. collaborator at the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at the University of Miami.
The storm has formed in the western Caribbean and has shifted gradually to the north, which is typical of this time of year. It will start in October, well before the hurricane season closes on November 30th. And the storm has followed a trajectory well predicted by computer models, which suggest a Panhandle landing for days.
