A husband and his wife died on Saturday morning when their small plane crashed behind a house in a wooded area of Woburn.
Officials identified the victims as Dr. Michael Graver, 65, and Jodi Cohen, 52.
Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan describes Graver as a "very experienced pilot" who was co-owner of the 2016 aircraft.
She says the couple left the Republic airport in Farmingdale, New York, around 9:30 am and that he was heading to Laurence G. Hanscom Field in Bedford.
The airport is about four miles from the place of the accident.
First responders said that there was a big fire when the first firefighters arrived at the scene.
The neighbors described hearing an explosion "that looked like the end of the world," then a big fire.
"It was bigger and wicked, like there had been an accident", a woman who refused to be named says Wicked Local. "Everyone's house has quaked up to Parker Street."
Robert Miguel was working in the yard of his sister's house on Grace Road when he heard the engine spraying the plane.
"Then there was nothing, just silence," he said. "So boom."
Miguel ran into the area where he thought the plane had fallen, halfway between two houses of Henderson Drive. He saw black smoke rising and several fires on the ground. He saw a wheel and part of the fuselage with the aircraft identification numbers. The smell of the gas was in the air.
"We called, but there was no answer," he said. "It's very difficult to see any loss of life."
No injuries were reported on the ground.
The FAA has identified the aircraft as an LC41 from Columbia Aircraft. The agency was en route to the scene to begin the investigation.
