Unlike previous competitions, all pods tested this time had to be self-propelled.

Previously, pods could count on a "pusher" built by SpaceX that helped them down the test tube.

Elon Musk participated in the competition and spent time talking to the teams and watching the tests.

"It's really the first opportunity to create a new mode of transportation," he told The Verge's information site.

"It's really what this competition is about – things that could radically transform cities and the way people move."
