President Trump said in a new interview that he has tried to tell the truth to the American people while serving in the White House, but stopped short of saying he has never lied.

"Well, I try, I mean, I do try," Trump told ABC News when asked if he's up to public engagement.

Trump turned the issue around the press, and said many news reports are incorrect even though reporters are trying to tell the truth.

"I think you too," he told ABC News' Jonathan Karl. "You say things that are not necessarily correct."

"I do try and I always want to tell the truth." When I can, I tell the truth, "Trump added.

"Sometimes it turns out to be where something happens but it's a change, but I always like to be truthful."

Trump also downplayed the idea that Democrats would investigate his administration of the House, and said he was always out of information about himself.

"I've been an open book for so long, Jon, you know that," Trump said. "I've been an open book."
