TORONTO – Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic scored the 500th goal of his career on Saturday against Toronto FC.
With the Los Angeles Galaxy 3-0, Jonathan dos Santos put the ball in the box. Ibrahimovic, six-foot-five, back to the goal, turned to the net to take a corner between defenders Nick Hagglund and Michael Bradley.
"I've never seen an outdoor volley, circular kick, thanks Zlatan," tweeted Dax McCarty of the Chicago Fire.
After scoring, an expressionless Ibrahimovic went away from the goal, shaking hands with his teammates.
The Galaxy star entered the match tied for second in the scoring of the MLS with 16 goals this season. He joins Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Juventus' Cristiano Ronaldo as the only active players with 500 goals for the club and the country.
Sixty-two of Ibrahimovic's goals came to Sweden. The rest is played by Malmo FF, Ajax, Juventus, Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United and Galaxy.
His first chance Saturday came in the 12th minute but Bono parried his shot.
Ibrahimovic, 36, had a good week. He learned that he was the best MLS player in the new FIFA 19 video game, ahead of David Villa of New York City FC and Sebastian Giovinco of Toronto.
