Pilots of a crowded Icelandair flight had to make an emergency landing north of Quebec City Friday night after breaking a cockpit window.

Flight FI688 traveled from Orlando (Florida) to Reykjavík (Iceland) when pilots noticed a crack in one of the windows. The plane flew over Canada at the time. He was thus routed by the usual procedures to a nearby airport, said an official of Icelandair on Twitter.

The pilots landed in Bagotville, more than 200 kilometers north of Quebec City.

Harrison Hove, a Florida reporter, said that he was on board the flight at that time and went on Twitter to document the madness.

"The OMG cockpit window is broken in the plane. Fast descent on IcelandAir F1688 Orlando MCO flight to KEF. The emergency teams respond. The passengers are sure of what I can say. I'm in the main cabin, "he tweeted.

Hove tweeted the captain said his left window was broken and that the pilot had had to get off the plane "quickly".

Once they landed, Hove said that an Icelandair mechanic had stated that the crack in the window was "significant", covering about 20 centimeters.

Canadian border patrolmen then boarded and checked each other's passports, according to Hove. The 155 passengers and seven crew members were taken to a hotel to rest and another plane should pick them up Saturday.
