A cold air mass from Canada will likely push record records in the Capital Region on Thanksgiving Day.
Local temperatures are expected to reach 24 degrees, one degree less than the record of November 22, 1880.
Beating the coldest Thanksgiving record of all time will be a little harder. The coldest Thanksgiving record in the Capital Region was set in 1901 at 19 degrees.
For George Regan, director of the 71st edition of Troy Trot Trot, the challenge will be what will be the temperature at 8 am for the 10km race. It is expected to reach a minimum of 13 degrees Wednesday night until Thursday.
Regan said he would order heaters for the finish line and the food court, and that a heated tent would be installed near the start line on Fourth Streets. and Fulton. He expects the cold to discourage the normal number of 7,000 runners and up, but Regan said the quality of the air and sunny conditions could make the race unique.
"If you're an adventurous person, you really should go out," said Regan. "Whenever there are adverse conditions like this, something wonderful happens."
Meanwhile, temperatures in the Adirondacks will be even colder. The minimum temperatures will be near zero Wednesday night and temperatures will only climb in adolescence on Thanksgiving Day.
While the sky will be sunny during the freezing holidays, the weather will be uncertain Wednesday night, which may make the holidays delicate.
Snow showers are likely to be Wednesday evening in the Capital Region, as well as west to Syracuse and north through the Adirondacks.
Joe Cebulko, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Albany, said the snow could appear randomly in heavy bursts. Any rapid accumulation will be aggravated by extremely cold temperatures making the roads smooth.
"If it passes over the highway and it snows half an inch or an inch and it melts and regains, you can get slippery and icy roads," Cebulko said.
The sky seems clear Wednesday night for drivers traveling south of Poughkeepsie and east of Massachusetts.
AAA predicts that, thanks to a better economy, road travel will increase by 5% this year from Thanksgiving compared to last year – trips to the United States by plane, train, bus and car being at its higher volume since 2005. High volumes also lead to long delays in travel to the most populated areas of the United States, such as New York.
Thanksgiving day until Friday will be even colder, with a minimum of 11 degrees.
Temperatures will rise again Saturday in the capital region, with a maximum of 40 degrees.
