A 3-year-old girl died from her wounds after a man committed a rampage at her birthday party at Boise, Idaho, according to authorities. Monday. Five more children were injured in the attack, as well as three adults who rushed to their defense Saturday night.

"Our victims are among the last members of our community, victims of their former homes who fled the Syrian, Iraqi and Ethiopian violence," said Boise Police Chief William Bones, at the time of his arrest. a press conference Sunday. "It was an attack against the most vulnerable – our children."

Bones said the investigators had not yet found evidence indicating that the attack was a hate crime, but said they would consider this possibility.

Boise Mayor David Bieter said he was heartbroken to learn of the girl's death.

"The thought of a happy occasion like a child's birthday party becomes the darkest of sentences in such a nasty way is almost unfathomable," said Bieter in a statement: "I know that every Woodlander joins me in conveying his deepest condolences to his family and loved ones, as well as to the eight other victims who are recovering from their wounds."
