No Indian institution is in the top 250 in the Times Higher Education (THE) 2019 World Ranking, although the Indian Institute of Sciences, Bengaluru, has maintained its position as the highest ranked center in the country, while Indian Institute of Technology -Indore has reached the highest position behind it.

The ranking, released Wednesday, shows that Oxford continues to hold first place, Cambridge second and Stanford third. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology earned a fourth place.

There was good news for India: the number of Indian institutions in the rankings rose from 42 last year to 49, making it the fifth best represented country. India is the most represented country when the top 200 are excluded.

The Indian group in the ranking was again headed by the Indian Institute of Science, which retained its position in the band 251-300. But IIT-Indore has become the second largest university in India – and one of the world's 400 largest institutions – with a high score in terms of research volume and impact on research.

It surpassed the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, which went from the band 351-400 to the band 401-500.

Pradeep Mathur, director of IIT-Indore, told THE: "Our efforts to make research the institute's priority are now reflected in the form of quotes and other indicators from Impact of research. We continue to make research the focus of all our programs. That's why you see that even our undergraduate students are actively involved in research projects and collaborations in India and internationally.

Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (headquartered in Tamil Nadu) has seen an increase from the 801-1000 band to the 601-800 band this year, with a particular improvement in its citation impact score (influence of research) .

However, while some institutions have won this year, the majority of Indian universities have remained stable or decreased, struggling against a backdrop of increased global competition, according to the global list.
