In the Philippines, a court sentenced former first lady Imelda Marcos to prison for corruption.

Imelda Marcos, 89, was the wife of the late President Ferdinand Marcos and was famous for owning 1,000 pairs of shoes.

The charges relate to allegations of illicit financial transactions with NGOs based in Switzerland, while he was a member of his husband's government in the 1970s and 80s.

The decision definitively banned Marcos, who is currently a member of parliament, from holding public office.

The corruption court found Marcos guilty of seven counts of violating the law on corruption and corrupt practices. She was sentenced to six to eleven years in prison for each charge.

Marcos was not present in court but a warrant for arrest has now been issued against her.

The case has been pending before the anti-corruption court for 27 years.

Marcos, who is currently a member of the House of Representatives, is running for governorship at the general election next year.

Attorney Ryan Quilala told local media that she would still be able to stand for election until she exhausted the appeal process. She is allowed to ask for a deposit.
